Ethan Abramson
I liked Ethan before I ever met him. You can tell a lot about a person from his work, and in this business I've learned to quickly evaluate quality and substance. I believe I introduced myself to Ethan after unfolding from inside his Thistle Console. The deceptively simple Thistle is both complex and straightforward, playful and sophisticated and made a great introduction to Ethan's work and character.
I've since had the chance to speak with Ethan on many occasions and sat down with him for a long Studio visit and interview. Decorated by stacks of reclaimed lumber from torn down buildings and planed purpleheart wood boards, upcycled from antique New York City benches due to be disposed of, the Ethan Abramson Studio is full of life.
Indirectly following in his grandfather Irving's footsteps, Ethan is making heirloom quality pieces for the modern world. His first chair, named after his grandfather won the Serendipity Locally Made award and was recognized by the Wall Street Journal as one of 2014's eight Best Chairs. We can't wait to see what he makes next.
How has your dad influenced you?
My father is the hardest working person I know. The first person in his family to go to college, followed up with 3 medical degrees, years and years of tireless days, and a long list of career goals met and exceed. The effort he continues to show in his work and all of his ventures, the passion he approaches every new situation with, and the dedication to the knowledge of his medical/spiritual craft has driven me constantly forward down any path I have taken in my life.
Having to choose specific moments when he has influenced me would be like choosing specific drops from a rain storm, he is the down pour that has helped grow any success I have had in my business, my craft, and my life.
