Andreu Carulla
Andreu Carulla is a gifted designer from Spain whose work we first came across in New York City's Design Week. I met Andreu in person for the first time in what was supposed to be a thirty minute conversation, on Skype... An hour and a half later we were both very, very late to our next appointments, but I also knew that I had met a kindred spirit and someone I would be working with for many years to come.
Here is what Andreu shared with us for Father's Day:
I was born in the late 70's, my father got married in jeans and my mother's wedding bouquet consisted on a handful of wild herbs she picked up on her way to the altar... So, indeed, my upbringing was hippie-style. But besides passing on his love and respect for nature and animals, my father also taught me about discipline, perseverance and hard work, maybe to compensate for a more "chaotic" mom, so I guess I got the best of both worlds.
My first memory of my father is him filming me and my big brother on his Super 8 movie camera, as we were running around our backyard, chasing the puppies we bred at home.
My father always made sure that we would learn something everyday (we would get home from school to find some unresolved calculus on our play blackboard for us to solve...) and I think I still apply that philosophy here at my studio, where I enjoy discovering and trying new techniques for our designs, and learning skills from experienced craftsmen. Also, his love for all things simple and natural has undeniably influenced my design approach.
My father always believed in me and what I wanted to be, supporting my decisions and cheering me on all through college and during he hard beginnings of my studio. He still supports my work, now that he is retired, by taking care of all the flora at the studio :)
